The first legislation that was passed to set up the institutional infrastructure required to manage the tourism industry was the Tourist Board Act NO: 10 of 1966 and the Tourism Development Act NO 14 of 1068. Heading for a massive restructuring process a new Tourism Act was promulgated with effect from 01st October 2007. In terms of the New Act No: 38 of 2005 Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management, Sri Lanka Convention Bureau were created to operate as independent establishments with wider opportunities for the public and private sector to work together. Another important aspect of the act was to set up the Tourism Development Fund to generate funds required for the implementation of the tourism projects and related activities by the four agencies.
