At that time held office as a Vice President of the Ceylon Workers' Congress. However, raised several issues with the leadership of the Ceylon Workers' Congress relating to the discriminatory attitude of the party towards the Muslim community and ultimately, resigned from the Ceylon Workers' Congress, due to the party refusing to accede to the request to allocate to Muslim schools, a proportionate number from and out of teaching appointments which the Ceylon Workers' Congress had secured for schools in the plantation Districts. Took the matter to the Supreme Court and the Ceylon Workers' Congress has been compelled to arrived at a settlement of the case, in terms of which 600 appointments from and out of the proposed teaching appointments to schools in the Plantation Districts would be allocated to Muslim schools.
Working very closely with His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapakse, he won the confidence consequent to which was appointed as the Special Presidential Coordinator for the Kandy District.
Main areas of focus are the education of, and the alleviation of poverty within, the Muslim community and the role of Muslims in the Peace Process. He has endeavored to upgrade Muslim schools by providing facilities and pressing for appointment of qualified teachers in such schools. He sought to empower Muslims by providing employment opportunities and training in fields such as computing and language proficiency.
He was the Vice Chairman - Sri Lanka Land Reclamation & Development Corporation (2002 - 2003), Vice Chairman - National Housing Development Authority (2003 - 2004) and is currently a Member of Public Accounts Committee of Parliament and Member of Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE).
