The Ministry has initiated a project to ensure the sustainable development on the tourism sector with the financial assistance from World Bank. SLTDA was appointed an implementing Agency under the Ministry supervision. Estimated project cost is Rs. 2,000 million. The Steering Committee was set up by the Hon. Minister of Tourism.

The main components of the Project are as follows.
. Decentralization of Powers to Provincial Councils
. Institutional capacity building.
. Solid Waste/Water management in Passikudah
. Provide assistance to SME sector in new project development.
. Development of Whale watching in South of the Island.
. Development of herbal gardens for Ayurvedic Tourism
. Development of Agro Tourism Sector.
. Development of Lime Stone caves at Waulpane for Tourism.
