With the improved security situation and the returning to normalcy of civilian life in Eastern Province, it has been considered to begin a process of developing tourism to the region. As the first step it is decided to develop infrastructure facilities of the eastern region by supporting the Neganahira Navodaya initiative of the Government. This strategy is to make use of the exotic resources available in the area and uplift the quality of life of the people in the area where tourism will blossom. The projects undertaken,

Hot Water Springs at Kanniya,

Mahaoya and Landing pier at Pigeon Island These projects consist of construction of basic facilities like changing rooms, renovating of existing toilets, construction of parapet walls, comfort centres and developing access facilities. A landing pier for the famous Pigeon Island in Trincomalee is being constructed under this programme to ensure the visitor safely. Development of Kanniya and Mahaoya hot wells are currently in progress.

Seruwila Museum and State Guest House

The objective of the projects is to develop Seruwila as a tourist destination with a view to attract both domestic and international tourists. The Seruwila Rajamaha Viharaya is one of the major tourist destinations in the Eastern Province. In the recent past, many archeological monuments and ruins were found in this area where construction of the museum will provide information on the historical importance and protect ruins. Hence, the proposed project will be able to attract more tourists. Total cost of the two projects is Rs. 32 million. Fifty per cent of the total cost of the museum (Rs. 8 million) will be borne by the Bank of Ceylon. The remaining Rs. 24 millions has to be given by the consolidated fund. Construction work of the Seruwila Musuem is completed.
